How to use the 6-letter word finder
Three filter fields let you describe exactly what you know:
- Position. Known: Enter any letters whose exact position you know — these are the green tiles in Wordle. Place each letter in the corresponding numbered cell.
- Position. Unknown: Add letters you know are in the word but haven't placed yet — yellow tiles in Wordle. The tool finds words containing all of them regardless of position.
- Exclude: Add letters that are definitely absent from the 6-letter word — grey tiles in Wordle. Every result will omit these letters entirely.
- Find Words: Click to see every matching valid English word with its Scrabble point value. Toggle Sort High→Low in the results settings to rank by score.
Top-scoring 6-letter Scrabble words
6-letter words often let you clear most of your Scrabble rack, earning strong base scores and setting up for a 7-letter bingo on the following turn. Words with uncommon letters like FIZZLE (27), QUARTZ (24), and JOCKEY (22) score exceptionally when played on premium squares.
Set up bingos with 6-letter plays
A 6-letter play that leaves one easy tile on your rack positions you for a 50-point bingo bonus next turn. Aim to play through a common letter already on the board (S, R, T, E, N) so your next 7-letter play using the board tile becomes possible. Study common 6-letter 'bingo stems' like SATINE, RETINA, and ARIOSE — adding one letter makes many valid 7-letter words.
The most common 6-letter Scrabble words
Statistically frequent 6-letter words include STRING, PLATES, MASTER, CASTLE, and STREAM. Knowing these means you'll recognise them on a board faster and play them reflexively without consulting a solver. High-value plays include FIZZLE, QUARTZ, and JOCKEY.
Q without U in 6-letter words
QIGONG, QINTAR, and QAWWALI are longer Q-without-U words, but in 6-letter territory your best Q-without-U plays are often extended versions of shorter words (QIGONG for Q+IGONG). Knowing these gives you an answer when you draw Q and the board has no U available.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many 6-letter words are there in English?
There are roughly 15,000–22,000 valid 6-letter words in standard Scrabble dictionaries. The larger vocabulary means more possible plays in every game position, which is why a strong Scrabble player memorises the highest-frequency 6-letter words rather than trying to learn them all.
What are the best 6-letter words to know for Scrabble?
Focus on high-frequency words and bingo-prone leaves: SATINE, RETINA, ARIOSE, SENIOR, NOTERS, and ALERTS are 6-letter words that, when combined with any common letter, often form valid 7-letter words. For raw scoring power, learn FIZZLE (27), QUARTZ (24), ZEPHYR (23), and JOCKEY (22).
Is there a 6-letter version of Wordle?
Yes — Wordle 6 (also called Wordle Plus or similar variants) uses 6-letter words. The same solving strategy applies: use the Position Known field for green tiles, Position Unknown for yellow tiles, and Exclude for grey tiles. 5WordLetters's 6-letter finder returns every valid word matching your clues.
