How to use the 3-letter word finder
Three filter fields let you describe exactly what you know:
- Position. Known: Enter any letters whose exact position you know — these are the green tiles in Wordle. Place each letter in the corresponding numbered cell.
- Position. Unknown: Add letters you know are in the word but haven't placed yet — yellow tiles in Wordle. The tool finds words containing all of them regardless of position.
- Exclude: Add letters that are definitely absent from the 3-letter word — grey tiles in Wordle. Every result will omit these letters entirely.
- Find Words: Click to see every matching valid English word with its Scrabble point value. Toggle Sort High→Low in the results settings to rank by score.
Top-scoring 3-letter Scrabble words
3-letter words are the building blocks of Scrabble strategy. Knowing short words like ZAX (19 pts), ZAP (14 pts), and OXO (13 pts) lets you squeeze tiles onto crowded boards and hook onto existing words for massive points.
Master 2-letter and 3-letter words for board control
In Scrabble, knowing short words is more valuable than knowing long ones. Words like QI, ZA, JO, and OX are legal plays worth massive points when landed on premium squares. Short words also let you hook onto existing plays, opening new scoring lanes without needing space for a full rack.
High-value tiles in 3-letter words
Z and Q are worth 10 points each; J and X are worth 8. If you hold one of these tiles, prioritise finding a 3-letter word that uses it rather than holding out for a longer play. ZAP (14), ZAX (19), QI (11), and JOX (17) can all be played in tight spaces for exceptional point-to-tile ratios.
Use 3-letter words as safety valves
When your rack is full of awkward letters, a well-placed 3-letter word clears problem tiles and scores enough to keep pace. Keep a mental list of the most useful short words (AXE, OXO, ZIT, FEZ, PHO) so you always have a play available.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many valid 3-letter words are there in English?
There are approximately 1,000–1,300 valid 3-letter words in Scrabble dictionaries (TWL and SOWPODS), including unusual but legal words like QI, ZA, PHO, and OWT. This makes 3-letter words one of the most rewarding sets to study for Scrabble improvement.
What are the highest-scoring 3-letter words in Scrabble?
ZAX scores 19 points, followed by ZAP (14), ZIT (12), JOY (13), QI (11), and OX (9). Words containing Z, Q, J, or X almost always top the 3-letter scoring chart. On a Triple Word Score square, ZAX scores 57 points — more than most 7-letter words.
What is QI in Scrabble?
QI is a valid Scrabble word (also spelled CHI) meaning the vital life force in Chinese philosophy and medicine. It is a 2-letter word — not a 3-letter word — and is the only legal Q word that does not need a U. Knowing QI and ZA (2-letter words) pairs naturally with mastering 3-letter plays, giving you plays in any board situation.
