How to use the 4-letter word finder
Three filter fields let you describe exactly what you know:
- Position. Known: Enter any letters whose exact position you know — these are the green tiles in Wordle. Place each letter in the corresponding numbered cell.
- Position. Unknown: Add letters you know are in the word but haven't placed yet — yellow tiles in Wordle. The tool finds words containing all of them regardless of position.
- Exclude: Add letters that are definitely absent from the 4-letter word — grey tiles in Wordle. Every result will omit these letters entirely.
- Find Words: Click to see every matching valid English word with its Scrabble point value. Toggle Sort High→Low in the results settings to rank by score.
Top-scoring 4-letter Scrabble words
4-letter words offer some of Scrabble's best point-to-length ratios. QUIZ scores 22 base points — land it on a Double Word Score and you get 44. JINX (18), WAXY (17), and COZY (16) are similarly powerful plays worth memorising. JAZZ scores a true 29 points, making it one of the highest-base-scoring 4-letter words.
4-letter words as Wordle openers
Some players use a 4-letter test word alongside their first Wordle guess to eliminate letters quickly before committing to a 5-letter guess. Words like OAFS, LUCK, or GRIN eliminate useful consonants in round one, narrowing the possibility space before you tackle the actual puzzle.
High-Q plays without a U
QOPH, QADI, QAID, and QOPH are all valid 4-letter words that use Q without a U — priceless when you draw a Q and the U is buried across the board. The QI approach (playing Q alongside another premium letter) can also produce excellent 4-letter scores.
Double letters in 4-letter words
Words with double high-value letters (JAZZ, FUZZ, BUZZ) score exceptionally well — JAZZ scores 29 base points. If you hold two of the same high-value tile, a 4-letter word that uses both is often your best play rather than waiting for the perfect 7-letter bingo.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many 4-letter words are there in English?
Standard Scrabble dictionaries contain around 3,000–4,500 valid 4-letter words. This is a particularly rewarding set to study because 4-letter words balance frequency (you'll play them every game) with impressive point values, especially when they include J, Q, X, or Z.
What is the highest-scoring 4-letter word in Scrabble?
QUIZ scores 22 base points. JAZZ scores 29, FIZZ scores 25, and FUZZ scores 22. Any of these on a Triple Word Score square yields 66–87 points before letter multipliers — potentially game-winning plays in a single turn.
Are 4-letter words allowed in Wordle?
Standard Wordle uses only 5-letter words. However, Wordle variants like Mini Wordle (4 letters) use 4-letter words exclusively. 5WordLetters's 4-letter finder is ideal for Mini Wordle — filter by green, yellow, and grey clues just as you would for the standard 5-letter game.
